Riding the Rails by Denny Lynn

I always ask to ride the train! For vacation this year, we got to ride the train from Springdale to Van Buren in Arkansas. We had to leave Oklahoma really early - or in the middle of the night as John says - to make it there for boarding. We put on our engineer hats and off we went.
It was really early...
...but it was worth it! Everyone was excited to be getting on the train.

We double checked our tickets to find our car.
Finally, they called "All Aboard!"
We were in a historic Pullman car - fully restored with air conditioning and plenty of room.

There was lots to see as we made our way through little towns, over trestles and through the woods.

We even got to visit the new "old" dining car they are restoring...

It is really pretty and someday they might even serve meals in there.
We played games and sang songs on the train - just having family fun on the rails.

In Van Buren we ate a neat little diner.
John had pancakes for lunch!
We checked out the town and found our way to Sonic for ice cream!

We saw lots of chicken trucks going through delivering chickens. I told John "that's were are nuggets come from!" We found more museums with cool railroad stuff.

We used the local gazebo as a racetrack - we ran the Derby, the Preakness and the Belmont.

We had too much fun!

Finally, it was time to watch the train couple up to take us back.
This is the engine that pulled us.
John thinks the best thing about the ride were the snacks.
Teddy was just glad to go along for the ride.
Wow - it was an amazing ride and a fun day full of excitement and quality family time. All I can say is, it is good to sleep on a train!
